2012 WGV Championship Tournament The Evenings details I would like to thank everyone who participated in our WGV Year End Tournament last night. We had a packed house which always makes the event that much more special. Our evening started out with the usual announcements and welcome to all our players. The began by giving players an additional $2,000 chips just for getting to the hall early. Six of our monthly champions had bounties placed on their heads. These bounties ranged from $10,000 chips to a Free Buy In to one of our WGV Monthly Texas Hold-em Tournaments. Put a Champion out of the game and win the bounty. The 50/50 went to Scott Yancey. That announcement was met with some hooting and hollering from everyone who did not win the 50/50. An assortment of 12 Pizza Pies were delivered by Cino's Pizza at 8:30. Somewhere along the line we did get to playing some poker! Early on we all were feeling pretty good about our chances! However... One by one we started getting knocked out of the game. Slowly, low hanging heads began walking away from their tables. Charley Henley was the first to go. Others followed. With their dreams shattered, these disappointed players walked out of the hall mumbling to themselves. So... for those of you who stumbled out early and did not stick around till the end of the tournament last night... This guy took all our chips!!! Steve Smith! Steve worked his way through 48 players to become our 2012 WGV Champion!! Steve started out dealing on table # 3 and moved up and up till he took home all the blue chips and went home with a REALLY BIG PAYDAY!! Steve went head to head with Jerry Rutherford in the final hands of the game. Jerry also came away with a nice hunk of change.$$ Jerry also 'took out' our last year's Champion Bob Thornton. The bounty he collected from putting Bob out of the game was $10,000 in chips and a free buy in to any one of our WGV Monthly Texas Hold-em Tournaments in 2012. The early stages of the final table. Steve looks confident but a bit short stacked! One by one the players all fell out of the tournament. Pictured below is Steve with our head dealer Len Thompson for the final winning hand. Our Winner of the 2012 WGV Texas Hold-em Championship Tournament...Steve Smith! The Hi hand for the evening went to John McClure with four tens. Third place went to Roger Price. 5th Bob Thornton 7th Allen Peek Full details of all our WGV poker games along with past winners can be found at our web site at www.wgvsocial.com or by clicking on the following link...http://www.wgvsocial.com/pokernig.htm A special THANKS to all our dealers of the evening. December 6, 2011 WGV Texas Hold-em Invitational Championship tournament Bob Thornton Takes the Title! This was a great evening of poker. 48 players crammed into the Amenities center of the King and Bear this evening to witness some great hands of No Limit Texas Hold-em Poker. It was a tight squeeze but we all managed to fit in. The evening started out with the introduction and return of our old friend Carolyn Sanders. Carolyn was my key person when we were setting up our first WGV Texas Hold-em games back in 2007. It was great to see her and... the fact that she had lost 130 pounds! Most people did not recognize her! Carolyn had moved from the King and Bear to Colorado in 2010. She looks great! Chas won the 50/50 which promptly got a round of boos from the crowd. Ha... Tough Nugees! Pizza from Cino's was delivered just in time for the first break. We all enjoyed the comfortable party atmosphere on the patio of the Amenities center. High hand for the evening was an odd one. First of all we were giving away two prizes. One for high hand and one for first runner up. The runner up was Pat Castellano. She had a full house and won the set of 'GAMBLER' golf balls. George Sabato and Shan Giordano split the high hand of Four Fives with an Ace kicker. How does that happen?.... Well it was an unusual hand as all four fives came up on the board and both had an ace kicker in their hands. Good thing for George that they split as he was 'All In' on that hand. The $94 was slit between the two players. The Giordano's did well this evening as Shan, just coming off her WGV Golf Club Championship win this past weekend, came in the money at the final table and split the Hi-Hand pool. Congratulations to Shan! Then Jim Giordano fought a hard battle into the late evening to place in third position for our championship evening. The Giordano's won big this evening! Nice Going! The top honors of the evening have to go to the play of both Carolyn Schreiber and Bob Thornton. June helps Carolyn with counting up a bet. Rake them in ! Carolyn! Carolyn, again and again came through on the River to win and win and win again and again. She could do no wrong! She made some great plays and outstanding 'Calls' in her quest for the championship. Her magic continued until she met our other player who was slowly, and quietly amassing a large number of chips, Bob Thornton. 'Sleepy' Bob Thornton, once known as 'One Chip' was just too much for Carolyn in heads up play. Bob would complain that 'It was late and he wanted to go home.' It seems this was all part of his game plan. Whenever he complained and went all in, he had trip eights or pocket kings! He's a crafty player! ' I'm tired...oh boy, am I tired' then he'd lay down a straight to the queen. Oy! Then again...Carolyn also laid down several traps for Bob. The two great players went back and forth with a mountain of chips each but in the end...Bob Thornton came out on top as our WGV Champion for 2011. Congratulations to Bob and Carolyn for some great, entertaining poker. Thanks to everyone who helped put this event together. Bob Thornton, Carolyn Schreiber, Art Niosi, Terry Leonard, June, my wife Doris and all our dealers for the evening. You all made this come off with out a hitch. Thanks, so much! Congratulations to Bob Thornton our 2011 WGV Texas Hold-Em Champion! Chas |

The Players... |
December 5, 2008 held our 2008 Tournament of Champions at the Swim and Tennis center within the King and Bear at World Golf Village. Our Players... Rich Dawson, Carolyn Sanders, Jack Philbin, Travis Cochrane, Bob Thornton and Steve Smith. Steve went out early. He just was not getting any cards. And, when he did...he got no matches on the flop. Jack Philbin had a huge chip lead early on but as you know...'the cards change.' Our championship table had our winner, Bob Thornton down to one chip with only four players remaining. ..And still came back to win it all.The final three players were Bob, Carolyn Sanders and Travis Cochrane. Carolyn's magic from Tuesday's game let her down and just could not get anything to match. She went out in third place which left Bob and Travis to battle it out for the final showdown. Travis had also come back from being down to only a couple of chips and 'all-in' several times during the competition. In the final hand... Bob came though to win it all.
